Harder. Safer. Smarter. Stronger. — Targeted De-icers
High-performance de-icers deliver faster, more specialised and longer-lasting results than standard rock salt. They combine advanced chemistry with application-specific design to optimise safety, cost-efficiency, and surface protection. Choosing the right solution depends on environment, infrastructure sensitivity, and budget.
Viaform – The All-Round Performer
Viaform is Peacock Salt’s most advanced formate-based de-icer, available in granular and liquid forms. Its mixed grain size (0.16–4mm) ensures rapid melting through fine particles and sustained action from larger grains.
- Performance: Effective to as low as –50°C, maintaining activity through its hygroscopic and hydrogen-bonding chemistry that inhibits refreezing.
- Corrosion & Concrete Safety: With a near-neutral pH (8–9) and zero chloride ions, Viaform minimises corrosion on metal and concrete.
- Environmental Impact: Formate ions naturally biodegrade into CO₂ and water, avoiding chloride-induced soil and water contamination.
Ideal for airports, bridges, and car parks, Viaform offers high performance with low environmental cost. - Accreditations: AMS 1431 (Solid), AMS 1435 (Liquid), UK REACH
Procoat – Engineered Protection
Procoat combines treated sodium chloride with Peacock 563 corrosion inhibitor, available in granular and liquid forms.
- Performance: Effective to as low as –7°C, outperforming untreated rock salt. Its medium–coarse grain (up to 6mm) ensures long-lasting coverage and reduced reapplication frequency.
- Corrosion Control: The inhibitor forms a molecular barrier on metal, reducing corrosion by up to 70%.Procoat is a cost-effective solution for bridges, platforms, and industrial sites, where infrastructure longevity is key.
Calcium Chloride – Power and Speed
A high-performance chloride-based de-icer, calcium chloride remains active to as low as –32°C.
- Chemistry: Hygroscopic and exothermic, it rapidly forms brine and releases heat for accelerated melting.
- Applications: Suitable for industrial and municipal sites where immediate de-icing is critical.
While more effective than rock salt, it should be used with care on metal and concrete due to residual chloride activity.
Magnesium Chloride - Modern, with Caveats
Effective to as low as –15°C, magnesium chloride shares calcium chloride’s fast action but with higher corrosivity, especially to reinforced concrete. Extended surface wetness increases rebar corrosion risk, and excessive application can harm vegetation. Best for controlled environments and moderate conditions.
Urea – Safe but Limited
A non-chloride, nitrogen-based de-icer, urea lowers the freezing point safely but only to around –4°C.
- Advantages: Non-corrosive, pet-safe, and surface-friendly—suited for walkways, rail platforms, and sensitive sites.
- Limitations: Decomposition releases ammonia, contributing to nutrient pollution. Many industries have transitioned to formate-based options like Viaform for superior performance and sustainability.
From formate innovation to chloride efficiency, Peacock Salt’s de-icing portfolio provides targeted solutions for every application—balancing performance, safety, and sustainability.
