Gripping Stuff: Why you need White De-icing Salt
We know salt is one of the most used minerals on earth. A bit like air, you may not always be conscious of its presence, but you would quickly notice its absence. This particularly applies to infrastructure with the arrival of ice and snow in Winter. There are over 14,000 uses of salt and one of the most important uses is as a de-icer. A severe UK Winter with prolonged periods of low temperatures can see up to two million tonnes of de-icing salt spread on our roads. Much of this is brown rock salt or ‘grit,’ mined from three indigenous sources. However, this type of road salt has its limitations. Mines can only produce so much, so quickly; Only so much can be stored at a time and when this runs out, as we have seen in previous severe Winters, where is the next port of call?
White De-icing salt is a clean, efficient, and sustainable de-icer for the future.
Sustainability
Our white de-icing salt is responsibly harvested from sustainable Mediterranean sources. It is produced using a natural process called Solar Evaporation. Seawater is pumped into shallow pools known as salt flats, graduating through the various pools as the water volume decreases and the salinity increases. Eventually the liquid evaporates entirely, leaving the salt crystals behind.
British standard
All of our de-icing salts conform to British Standard BS3247:2011. This is a certificate given to Winter salt that has met the industry standards for spreading on highways for winter maintenance. It is important to buy salt that comes with this assurance on quality ensuring efficient performance when you need it most.
Bag and bulk
Peacock Salt are a major supplier of de-icing salt but are proud to serve customers of all sizes from government contracts to gritting contractors to private customers. Whether you are looking for a single bag to de-ice your doorstep, or pallets and loose loads – we can help. White de-icing salt comes in variety of bag sizes - 10kg, 15kg, 20kg, 25kg 1000kg, and bulk loads.
Dry and free flowing
Our white de-icing salt is dry and free flowing. This means that when the bag is opened the salt is ready for use for spreading. Anti-caking agents are added to ensure that clumps do not form, and the salt remains free flowing.
Cleanliness, purity and almost 100% sodium chloride
With a chemical composition of almost 100% sodium chloride, our white de-icing salt is clean, pure and does not invoke the extra labour and expense of brown de-icing salt in terms of cleaning and maintenance of communal areas and vehicles.
